Tim Almaas

Professor and Head of the Bachelor program in Classical Ballet, Oslo National Academy of the Arts

Swedish/Norwegian Tim Almaas, was educated at the Royal Swedish Ballet School, primarely with Charles Mudry and in Paris with Raymond Franchetti.

He joined the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1980, making his debut as Franz in Coppelia the same year. He also danced leading roles 1800th century Drottningholm Court Theatre. In 1983 he received a Soloist contract Ballett der Deutsche Oper Berlin and later became Principal Dancer with London Festival Ballet/English National Ballet and London City Ballet and as well as having guest engagements in Japan, USA, Hong Kong, Germany and France. He is a founder member (1997) of Peter Schaufuss Ballet (Principal Dancer/Ballet Master) and continued as a guest for many years with the company until 2012.

In 2000 Prof. Almaas joined Central School of Ballet as 2nd year boys teacher and returned to Sweden to teach at the Royal Swedish Ballet School in 2002.

He moved to the Oslo National Academy of the Arts as Associate Professor in Classical Ballet in 2013, was promoted to Professor in 2016 and is presently Head of the Bachelor program in Classical Ballet.

Prof. Almaas is closely involved with Youth America Grand Prix where he is frequently part of the jury as well as teaching master classes.

He has worked with many of the greatest dancers and choreographers of the 20th century such as Rudolph Nureyev, Natalia Makarova, Roland Petit, Erik Bruhn, Jiri Kylian, Hans Van Manen, Olga Lepechinskaya and Birgit Cullberg.

Leading roles in ballets: Romeo and Juliet, La Sylphide, Swan Lake, Cinderella, Nutcracker, Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle as well as ballets by Balanchine, Kylian, Tudor, Bejart, MacMillan, Ashton, Petit, Roriz and many others.

Guest Teaching include: The Royal Swedish Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, Peter Schaufuss Ballet, European Ballet and Seresta Dance Company.

Choreographies and stagings include, “La Sylphide” (Bournonville), “Hop’til you drop”, “Piazzolla – Over and Out”, “The Lesson 2”, “Chopin”, dances from “La Bayardère” and “Raymonda”, “This Piece”, “Little Etudes” and “Vårdanser”.

Most recently Prof. Almaas choreographed “ET-2”, a 40 minute classical ballet for the entire ballet school, which also included pieces from Bournonville’s “Bridal Movements in Hardanger” and the internet hit, “Pas de Balanchine” by Tomas Karlborg.
